It is with much sadness that I report the death of 1st Dan Matthew Smith who has died as the result of a tragic accident in Cornwall. Matt was a member of the old Gloucester YMCA Judo Club, where he began his career as a Junior Player, and continued with his Judo as a Senior Judoka. As well as representing Gloucestershire, Matt went on to gain his 1st Dan (Black Belt). Our thoughts and sympathies are very much with his family at this sad time.

The highlight for the County since my last report has to be the County's success at the Commonwealth Championships at Walsall, with the County medalling in many various categories.

From the Bradley Stoke Club - James Hayes, Ryan Salman, Ethan Nairne, Leah Grosvenor, and Tatum Keen all took Gold in their respective categories, with Ben Moore and Maddie Young both in Bronze Medal positions.

The Dowty Club also had a good day with Gold medals in the Masters event on the Friday from Dean Douglas and Chris Andrews, with Martyn Davies taking Silver in his category, and the following day Callum Woodham took Silver in his pre-Cadet category. As I say, an excellent event for the County.

Back in October, four Players from the BS Club were part of a group of 12 who travelled to Japan as part of the GB Futures camp, and the party also included Coach Pete Douglas who was one of the five Coaches accompanying the squad.

Some of you may re-call earlier in the year reading about Harry Lovell-Hewitt from the Stroud Club, who shortly after his call into the GB Senior Squad required major surgery on his knee. Harry is re-covering well, and is now undertaking some drills and Uchi-komi, and hoping to be back in full training early next year.

Finally, the Safeguarding and TTL courses which took place at Dowty, delivered by Kerry Tansey, were well attended, and we shall probably do the same year.
