Meet the Coaches
Our Judo Coaches are all British Judo Association (BJA) qualified and checked through DBS ('Disclosure and Barring Service' formerly the CRB - 'Criminal Record Bureau' check).
The appointed county coach is Pete Salter and he currently has 3 coaches for the county squads. 1 for seniors Dean Douglas, 1 for juniors Bryan Butler and a floating coach Nick Brace who covers where needed.
Gloucestershire County squad sessions are held around the county at various clubs, so if you want the next location to be your club, get in touch with Pete Salter to arrange it.
Pete Salter has held his 6th Dan since 2019 and is a BJA qualified level 3 coach. As well as coaching in the club, he oversees the county squad coaching team.
Pete has served as Chairman of Gloucestershire County Judo since it was constituted as a committee over 30 years ago, and has also held the position of County Coach for that time.
Pete has run the Dowty Judo Club along with his wife Chris since 1975, and in 1981 along with other members of the Dowty Club, created a purpose built Dojo.
During this period of time, Pete has coached at Club, County and Area level. Coaching Players at all three levels to Club, County, Area, National, and International standard.
Pete served as Western Area Technical Director for approximately 5 years, and was also the Western Area Vice Chairman for a period of time.

Dean Douglas has held his 4th Dan since 2007 and is a BJA qualified level 3 coach at Dowty Judo Club. As well as coaching in the club, he coaches the senior county squad sessions.
Dean has competed at county, area, national and international level and has previously been a member of the GB Masters squad.

Bryan Butler has held his Dan grade since 1987 and has been a BJA qualified level 2 coach at Newent Judo Club and Dowty Judo Club since the early 1990s.
As a teenager he represented his club - Dowty, Gloucestershire and the West of England at numerous competitions up to National level, he still represents Newent Judo Club at the occasional competition.
Bryan is the joint Gloucestershire junior squad coach.
Bryan is also an active member of the Gloucestershire County Committee, helping to organise local events.

Nick Brace has held his 4th Dan since 2011 and is a level 3 coach at Bradley Stoke Judo Club, which he co-founded in 1999. As well as coaching in the club, he coaches at the county squad sessions.
Nick has competed at county, area, national and international level and currently is a member of the GB Masters squad. In 2010 he was placed 5th at the IJF World Grand Masters Championship.
Nick has also been a referee in the past, up to national level.
