For reasons which I will not bore you with now, I missed the last deadline for the last county report, which in turn meant that I missed the opportunity to join other Counties in recording our sympathies with regard to Phil's passing. We did however convey our condolences to Maggie and her family, via Andy Gault who kindly kept me informed during this sad time.
The big news in our County over the summer has to be the achievement of Harry Lovell-Hewitt.....
Here is the rest of Pete's report.
There always seems to be plenty going on in the county, and 2017 was no exception. In my quarterly reports throughout the year, I tend to record the successes of some of the more high profile players in the county as they occur, so rather than repeat myself.....
Here is the rest of Pete's report.
The West of England team Championships having taken place at the Hutton Moor Leisure Centre in Weston Super Mare, with Gloucestershire having an excellent day. Following the clean sweep the County enjoyed back in 2016, and a slightly leaner year by comparison in 2017, this was Gloucestershire getting back to their winning way's, and out of four categories contested, the County took 1st place in two of them, and second place in the other two.
The County has a strong history in the Senior Men's Bob Taylor event having won the title at varying times over many years, and this year a young team did the County proud by getting their name on the Trophy once again. In doing so, the County team recorded wins against five other Counties in the Western Area, beating Devon 4-1, Somerset 4-1, Dorset 4-0, Bristol 4-1, and last years winners Cornwall 3-2. The winning team was made up of :-
Joe Andrews - Bradley Stoke Judo Club
Ryan Salman - Bradley Stoke Judo Club
Jacob Lovell-Hewitt - Stroud Judo Club
Andy Ritchie - Dowty Judo Club
Jonathan Lockey - Dowty Judo Club
The Pre-Cadet and Cadet Boy's team were the other Gold Medallists who took the title with a 4-2 win against Dorset, and a big 6-1 win against old rivals Devon.
The Pre-Cadet and Cadet Girl's team took 2nd place in their category, and the younger mixed Girls and Boys team also came in second in their category.
So all in all, an excellent day for the County in a competition which involved some of Gloucestershire's talented Judo Players from Junior to Senior status

The Dowty Judo Club has held its 2017 awards evening. The event took place in the Dowty Sports and Social Clubhouse at Staverton, and was attended by some 70 Players, Junior and Senior, along with family and friends.
Chairman and Coach Pete Salter, reported on a good year for the Club with a steady level of competition successes, and whilst the Junior section would benefit from a small increase in members, the Senior section looks potentially very strong as older Juniors move into the Youth/Senior section.
As well as reporting on the competitive side of Club activity, Pete also emphasised the importance to the Club of the recreational Player, Junior and Senior, and also reported on a successful Clubmark re-validation. The Club's status as a Clubmark organisation, marks it down as a Club that fully meets all Sport England criteria in delivering the Sport of Judo. The Club's Coaches were all recognised.
